Relevant apparatus shall be constructed so that:

the electromagnetic disturbance it generates does not exceed a level allowing other relevant apparatus to operate as intended
and
it has a level of intrinsic immunity which is adequate to enable it to operate as intended
when it is:

i)

properly installed and maintained; and

ii)

used for the purpose for which it was intended.

In other words, "Do not cause interference and make sure you are immune to interference".

Directive translated into UK law as EMC Regulations 1992 (SI 1992/2372) and amended EMC Regulations 1994 (SI 1994/3080) plus other amendments.
