| Low Voltage Directive (LVD) - 72/23/EEC.
Although this has been in existence for over 20years, the CE Marking Directive (93/68/EEC)
amends the LVD
thus bringing it into the New Approach regime. The Directive is implemented in UK legislation as SI 1994/3260. It covers domestic, commercial and industrial electrical/electronic equipment operating using voltages of 50-1000VAC and 75-1500VDC. It concerns both consumer protection and health and safety at work. It covers all aspects of the safety of electrical equipment and is not limited to electrical safety. Self certification applies for CE Marking; a DoC is required based on a file of technical documentation. The file must include, amongst other things, a product description, a rationale for applying the CE Mark and supporting test reports. |
|
| Machinery Directive - 89/392/EEC is mandatory
and is implemented in UK legislation as SI 1992/3073 amended by SI1994/2063. It covers a
wide range of mechanical and electro-mechanical products. It is enforced in the UK by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Trading Standards Departments. Most equipment within the scope of the Directive can be self-certified except for machinery listed in Annex IV which must be examined by a Notified Body. |

| Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (TTE)
Directive - 91/263/EEC is implemented in UK legislation as SI 1992/2423. It covers
all equipment which is intended to be connected to the public Telecommunications Network
within the European Union to ensure that the network is not harmed or misused and to
maintain user safety. |
|
| Automotive Directive - 95/54/EC is
implemented in UK legislation as SI 1995/3180 plus amendments to the various vehicle
Type-Approval and Construction and Use Regulations. Effectively cars, trucks and buses for use on the road (plus any components fitted to them, e.g. a car alarm, either as OEM or aftermarket equipment) have to comply with 95/54/EC and not 89/336/EEC. There is a transition period until 01/10/2002. It is important to note that 95/54/EC does not apply to motorcycles, forestry tractors and mobile machines such as excavation equipment. |
